Domestic animals

The cheetah is the only cat that cannot climb trees. The cheetah also can run much faster than any other kind of cat. Cheetahs eat mainly small antelopes and the young of larger animals like baby zebras and baby wildebeast.

The cheetah is the fastest land animal, reaching speeds between 112 and 120 km/h (70 and 75 mph) in short bursts covering distances up to 460 metres (1,500 feet), and has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 110 km/h (68 mph) in three seconds, faster than most supercars.

A chestnut horse is a reddish-brown colour, with a mane and tail the same colour or lighter than the rest of the horse.

Most baby birds are called chicks. The chicks in the picture are wren chicks.

A chicken is a kind of bird that is kept as a source of food. Chickens lay eggs which we can eat, and we can also eat chickens. A female chicken is called a hen, male chickens are called roosters. Hens lay eggs, roosters crow when the sun rises.

Chihuahuas are the world's smallest breed of dog, named after their home state in Mexico. They are very loyal dogs, and are not suitable for a household with young children. They are prone to getting low blood sugar, and need regular feedings.

Clydesdales are draft horses from the Clydesdale region of Scotland. They are large, strong, attractive horses that today are used primarily by beer companies to pull carts full of barrels, or pulling wagons at fairs and parades.

A colt is a young male horse, generally one under four years old. The colt in the picture is one year old.

Corgis are a small herding dog originally bred in Wales. The most famous owner of corgi dogs is the Queen of England. Corgis are a funloving dog, and make good family pets.

Normal cats have three layers of hair. Cornish Rex cats only have the undercoat, which is very short, soft and silky. They also have curly hair.

Cornish Rex's are a slim, friendly cat suitable for shy children. Because of their thin coat they are best kept as an indoor cat.

The cougar is a kind of large cat that is also known as a puma or mountain lion. It is the equal fourth largest cat, after the tiger, lion and jaguar.

Cougars hunt large animals like deer and wild sheep and goats, but will also hunt domestic animals like horses.
