Light is a type of energy that makes you able to see things. Things like light bulbs, candles and the sun emit light.
Things that don't emit light reflect light, which makes you able to see them.
Something shines when a bright light comes from it.
Something can shine from a reflection or it may be the source of the light, like the sun in the picture.
Sunset is the time of day when the sun goes down below the horizon. The sky goes from dark to coloured with lots of shades of pink and orange and red and then to deep purple before the sun goes completely below the horizon and it is night time.
The time just after sunset before it gets completely dark is called dusk. The opposite of sunset is sunrise.
Auroras, sometimes called the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis, are lights that are seen in the sky in areas close to the north pole. They occur when solar winds from the sun pass through the Earth's atmosphere. The shape of the lights follows the Earth's magnetic field.
A beach is the sandy edge of the sea or a lake. A beach is sometimes called the shore. People like to go down to the beach and sit in the sun, make sandcastles or go swimming.
Scientific name: zinnia elegans
A zinnia is a bright, pretty flower originally from Mexico, and are often found in people's gardens. They come in a wide variety of different colors and shapes depending on their type. They like full sun and fertile, well-drained soil.
Mistletoe is a name for a group of unrelated plants that all grow the same way - by being partly parasitic on another plant. This means they grow partly inside another plant, using it as a source of nutrition. Mistletoes can also generate some of their own food from the sun like other plants.
Mistletoe is often used as a Christmas decoration. It is a tradition that any male and female who meet under the mistletoe must kiss.
Rainbows happen when the sun shines through a very fine spray of water, like rain in the air or the spray from a garden hose or even from a waterfall.
The rainbow is colourful because as sunlight travels through the water spray, it splits into a spectrum of colours. All the colours you see in a rainbow are there all the time in normal light, but they are mixed up together so you only see white light.
You can also see the colours of the rainbow by shining light through a prism.
