Words that start with W

Wet walruses waving wildly at Wendy the wallaby in Wallaroo.

Wis forWhorl

A whorl is a pattern where things grow or spread outward in a circle from one central point, like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. Instead of twisting up into a long coil like a spring, everything stays neat and flat in a single ring. On plants, if three or more leaves form a perfect ring around the exact same spot on the stem, that is a leaf whorl. On Animals, a "cowlick" is a swirling circle where the fur grows outward from a single point. Or on your fingers. Some people have a whorl pattern made of circular skin ridges that look like target rings.

Wis forWhy

Wis forWick

A wick is a piece of braided cotton cord that runs through the center of a candle. Wicks work by drawing melted candle wax up from the candle, and the melted wax burns in the wick. You have to light the wick with a match to start the process.

Wis forWicker

Wicker is the name given to woven furniture and baskets. Wickerware can be made from thin willow branches, bamboo, plastic or wire. The frame of wickerware is usually made from rattan vine, and sometimes the rattan is cut into strips and used for making the wicker itself.

Wis forWide

Something is wide if there is a long distance from one side of it to the other. The river in the picture is wide. The opposite of wide is narrow.
Widespread means that something is covering a large area. Weather patterns are often widespread.

Wis forWidow

Wis forWig

A wig is just some fake hair. You can get wigs in almost any colour, either brightly coloured ones like in the picture, or natural coloured ones that look like real hair. Some people wear wigs for fun, others wear them because they are bald and don't want other people to know. A wig that only covers part of your head is called a toupee.
