Lye is a <a href="/c/corrode">corrosive</a>, <a href="/a/alkaline">alkaline</a> chemical. It was traditionally made from hardwood <a href="/a/ash">ash</a>, and is an ingredient in <a href="/s/soap">soap</a>. Modern lye is called caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide and is no longer made from ash.
