A vowel is a speech sound made when air flows out of your mouth without closing it. In English, the main vowel letters are a, e, i, o, and u. The letter y can also act as a vowel in some words, such as "gym" and "happy". Vowels can have short or long sounds.
Every English word or syllable usually has at least one vowel sound. Vowels help us say words and separate one syllable from another, as in "cat" and "cake". The word "vowel" comes from an old word meaning "voice" or "speaking sound".
