A parachute is a large piece of fabric you attach to yourself if you know you are going to fall a very long way and want to land safely. Parachutes slow down the speed of your fall by creating drag.
Parachutes are used by skydivers, to slow down racing cars and space shuttles, and for dropping supplies to stranded people from a plane so the supplies don't break on the way down.
