You grate food by rubbing it against a grater. A grater is a board that has lots of holes in it with sharp edges, and it scrapes small pieces of the food off with these sharp holes. The result is a pile of finely grated food.
The most commonly grated foods are cheese and carrots.

A grill is a metal grid that is placed over intense heat or open fire which is used for cooking food, typically meat.

Gut is a slang word for your stomach and intestines or just that part of your body - the man in the picture has a large gut.
When you are preparing a whole animal to be cooked, the process of gutting it is the process of removing its internal organs, including its stomach and intestines.

Icing, or frosting, is a very sweet decorative layer that is put onto cakes and cookies. Icing can be made into any color, and varies from a soft spread to a very hard consistency. Icing is most commonly made from a mixture of icing sugar and butter, with coloring and flavors added.

Julienning is a way of cutting food into thin, even sized pieces that are similar in size to matchsticks. Hard vegetables like carrots are most frequently julienned.

Kis forKnead

Kneading is a way of mixing ingredients together to form dough. Kneading warms the dough slightly, and breaks the proteins in the flour down into gluten strands. When dough is kneaded enough it has a smooth, elastic texture. Dough that hasn't been kneaded enough won't rise as well when it is cooking, and will be hard instead of soft and fluffy.

A marinade is the liquid used to marinate food. soy sauce is a popular marinade.

Marinating is the process of soaking food in a flavored liquid called a marinade before it is cooked. Meat is often marinated, but vegetables can be marinated too. Marinades are often acidic, which helps soften meat that is a bit tough.

When you mash something, you change its consistency to be soft and mushy, but not completely smooth. The most common kind of food that is mashed is boiled potato, which is mashed with milk and butter and called simply mashed potato.

A menu is a list of choices. It most commonly means a list of meals available at a restaurant.

Minced meat, or ground meat, is meat that has been cut into very small pieces by a mincing machine. Meat is not the only thing that can be minced, but is prepared this way so often that it can be referred to just as mince alone.

Mousse is a sweet dessert made with whipped cream. Mousse has a very light and fluffy consistency and can come in a variety of flavors, the most popular being chocolate.

The outermost layer of fruit or vegetables is called the peel. Some fruits and vegetables have a soft peel that you can eat, but many have a hard or bitter peel. For most fruits and vegetables you use a peeler to remove the peel, but some fruits like bananas and mandarins have peels that are easy to remove with just your fingers.
You can peel anything that has a removable outer layer, not just food, but the term is most often used in relation to fruit and vegetables.

Pickling is a way of preserving food. The most common vegetables pickled today are cucumbers, olives and onions.
Pickling is a way of preserving food by storing it in acid, either directly by using vinegar or by fermenting food in salty water to make lactic acid. Herbs like garlic and mustard are often added to pickles both for flavour and to help keep germs at bay.

Piping is a method of cooking or baking where an ingredient such as dough or frosting is put in a bag and pushed out of a narrow hole that allows the cook to make pretty shapes or decorations.

Poaching is a method of cooking food, most commonly eggs, by immersion in water that is almost boiling.

You puree food by pushing it through a sieve or putting it into a blender so it becomes a thick liquid, without any lumps.
Meat is cooked rare if it is only cooked very lightly, and it is still pink in the middle.

Ris forRoast

Something is roasted if it is cooked for a long time over dry heat, like in an oven or over a fire.
Meat and vegetables are both roasted either whole or in large pieces.
