Lacrosse is a team sport played with a small rubber ball and long sticks called crosses. Each stick has a netted pocket at one end. Players use the pocket to catch, carry, and pass the ball. They try to shoot it into the other team's goal while protecting their own goal.
Lacrosse began among Indigenous peoples of North America and was first used for sport, training, and ceremonies. French explorers called it la crosse, meaning "the stick," because the stick looked like a bishop's staff.
