A marathon is a very long race where people run a distance of about 42 kilometers (26 miles). It is one of the most demanding running events because it requires great endurance.
The race is named after the ancient Greek story of a messenger who ran from the town of Marathon to Athens to report a military victory. Today the word marathon can also describe any activity that lasts a very long time.
