A fledgeling (also spelt fledgling) <a href="/b/bird">bird</a> is one that has just grown its adult <a href="/f/feather">feathers</a> and is ready to learn to <a href="/f/fly/motion">fly</a>. Someone who is just starting out doing something can also be called a fledgeling, or a <a href="/n/novice">novice</a>.
