Hope is a feeling that something good may happen or that a difficult situation may improve. It combines a wish with some belief that the wished-for result is possible. People can hope that they pass a test, or hope that someone will recover. Hope does not mean that the result is certain, but hope helps people to keep trying. The word comes from the Old English word hopian, meaning to expect or look forward to something.
