A spike is a long, thin, pointed object. Some kinds of <a href="/n/nail">nail</a> are called spikes. Some types of <a href="/s/shoe">shoes</a> have spikes on the <a href="/s/sole">sole</a> to give them better grip. Many plants and animals grow their own spikes as a type of defense.
