Greyhounds are a type of dog that are bred for chasing game and racing. They have very short hair and a slim, muscular build with a deep chest. They are intelligent dogs and are becoming popular as family pets.

Huskies are a kind of dog that has been bred to pull sleds over snow. They are from Siberia, and have a very thick coat to keep out the cold.

Irish wolfhounds are the tallest breed of dog, although some Great Danes may stand a little taller. They have a short life expectancy of around 6 and a half years. The breed is thousands of years old and was originally developed to hunt wolves. Despite their size they are not an overly energetic dog, but still need regular exercise.

Jack Russells are small dogs that are mainly white, with patches of brown or black. They might have smooth or rough coats. They were originally bred for hunting foxes. They are intelligent, energetic, fearless and vocal. If they are left alone or not exercised enough, they can get bored and destructive. They do not make good indoor dogs.

A jackal is a small to medium sized close relative of the dog. They are found in Africa, Asia and some parts of Europe. Jackals normally live together in pairs, although they will sometimes form small packs to hunt. They hunt small to medium animals, and will eat dead animals they find. Like household dogs they will also eat fruit and other plants as well as meat.

The Australian kelpie is a medium sized dog that was bred to herd animals like sheep, cows and goats. Kelpies come in a range of colours but the most familiar one is a reddish-brown coat. Kelpies are very energetic and are only suitable to be kept as pets by people who have a lot of time and space to exercise them. Bored kelpies can be noisy and destructive.

The labrador retriever is a very popular breed of gun dog. They were originally developed to retrieve birds after they were shot. Labradors come in three main colours - yellow, black and chocolate. Labradors are a gentle, intelligent dog and make excellent family pets. They can be trained to be helping dogs, and are used as guide dogs for blind people.

Maltese are small toy or lap dogs with silky white hair. They are an ancient breed, and were used as a lap dog by ladies in Roman times. They have black eyes and a black nose, which gives them a very "cute" appearance. Maltese are cuddly companion dogs, and thrive on attention but can be snappy around children. They have a reputation for being a yappy dog.

A mongrel is a dog that you cannot tell what breed it is. Mongrels might simply be cross breeds, but are usually stray dogs that have been mixed breed for so long there is no way of telling what their ancestry is.
