The hilt or <em>haft</em> of a <a href="/s/sword">sword</a> is its <a href="/h/handle">handle</a>. Some sword hilts are quite elaborate, and have a <em>guard</em> between the hilt and <a href="/b/blade">blade</a> to protect the user's hands from damage.
