A hinge is a device for making something bend easily. Doors and some windows have hinges so you can open them. Chests and some other boxes have hinged lids, and laptop computers open with a hinge. You can clearly see the hinge on the lid in the picture.

A hook is a curved shape you attach something else to. Hooks are shaped so you can hang something on a hook and it won't slip off, or you hook something to something else and they don't come apart. Hooks are often used on a crane to lift things. Many birds have a hook-shaped beak.

An hourglass is a device that uses the passage of an amount of sand from the top to bottom half of the device to mark time. The amount of time an hourglass can mark depends on the size of the hourglass and the amount of sand in it. An hour would be the standard amount, but hourglasses can also be bought that are egg timers for cooking hard or soft boiled eggs, or shower timers when people want to save water.

An iron is a device that is used for flattening out wrinkles in clothes. Irons have a handle at the top and a flat, smooth, metal bottom that is heated up. Once the bottom is hot it is rubbed over your clothes to smooth them out. Irons work better if the clothes are very slightly damp so many irons have a spray or steam feature. Old fashioned irons were made of solid metal, and you put them in a fire to heat them up. Modern irons are heated by electricity. Iron is also a type of metal.

A jack is a device for lifting heavy objects off the ground by pushing them up from underneath. Jacks are used to raise things a short distance only. They are commonly used to lift one corner of a car off the ground while you change a tyre. Jack is also a variation of the name John.

A kettle is a container that is used to boil water in. They are designed to be used over a stove or fire, although the more recent electric kettle simply plugs into a power point. Kettles have a spout to pour from and a handle to hold it, very similar to a jug.
