The one feature they all share is that they either live on in their host, and damage the host to some degree for their own benefit. Fleas are the parasite that most people are familiar with. The parasite in the photo is mistletoe.

They originally come from the warmer areas of the world and are usually found in forests. They eat seeds, nuts and fruit. The can live for a long time, with the larger parrots sometimes living to 80 years old.
