Lis forLandmine

Landmines are explosive devices that are triggered when someone stands on them or a vehicle drives on them. An area that is studded with landmines is called a minefield. The mines are usually buried just under the ground so that people can't see them. They are used to keep people from going through an area during a war. The problem with landmines is, after a war is over there may be thousands of landmines still left in the ground, and noone knows exactly where they are. So they kill people when they go to start a farm, or children who are exploring. Even the process of removing them is extremely dangerous as they can explode at the slightest touch.

A lion is a kind of large wild cat. Male lions have a mane around their head, and female lions - called lionesses do not. Lions live in groups called prides, and they hunt animals like zebra and antelope to eat.
Mines are very large holes that people dig to get minerals out of the ground. Minerals can then be processed into useful things like metal. Mines can be underground tunnels or they can be open cut mines like in the picture. Open cut mines are more common today as they can be mined easier and more safely than underground mines, using enormous trucks and digging machinery.

Norfolk Island pine trees are a very distinctive type of tree originally only found on Norfolk Island. They grow very well on the coast. They have interesting compound leaves that make long, round straps made up of tiny leaves that look like a scaly snake. The adult trees are symmetrical and are often planted in a line along roadsides. They are not a true pine tree, and will not tolerate cold climates the same way pine trees do.

Pine trees or conifers come in all shapes and sizes, although most are quite large trees. They all have some features in common. They all have cones instead of flowers. They all have leaves that look like thin green needles. Most pine trees grow from one central point at the top of the tree only and do not branch, which gives most pine trees a distinctive cone shape. Some species do branch, but not as much as most other trees do. Because pine trees usually grow tall and straight without branching they are commonly grown as plantation timber to harvest their wood for building houses and furniture out of.
