A colander is a type of bowl with handles and lots of holes in the bottom. Colanders, sometimes called drainers or strainers, are used to drain water off wet food like freshly cooked pasta or to dry off washed salad ingredients.

Coriander, also called Chinese Parsley, is a soft, fast-growing annual herb - it lives for a year or less. It is very easy to grow from its big, round seeds. It is best planted in early Spring, and again in Autumn in warmer areas. In warm weather it will go to seed very fast so it is best to plant it in a cool, sheltered spot. Coriander leaves are is used fresh in a lot of Asian - particularly Thai, Middle Eastern and African cooking. It is also used in some South American dishes. Both the fresh leaves and the dried seed, powdered or whole, are used in cooking. Ground coriander seed is one of the main ingredients in curry powders and mixed spice. Coriander is also used to flavour cakes, cooked fruits and cookies and goes very well with chicken, fish and vegetable dishes. Coriander is though to help digestion and is useful in treating colic.

The jacaranda is a tree originally from Mexico. It is deciduous, and is covered in purple flowers in spring. They survive well in areas with long, hot summers. Jacarandas are frost sensitive when they are young, but frost hardy when they are older.

Their sap is toxic, and even the dead, dried plant is dangerous. Horses have been known to die from eating oleander leaves. Even a single leaf might be enough to kill a small child.

The giant panda is a large, black and white animal native to China. It is a kind of bear. Pandas can weigh around 100kg. Pandas eat almost entirely bamboo, but will sometimes eat fish or eggs if they find them.
