Dachshunds are a small dog with a long body and short legs, sometimes called a sausage dog. Some people say that a dachshund is "two dogs long and half a dog high". They are the shape they are because they were bred to hunt animals that live down burrows, such as badgers and rabbits. Dachshunds come in a variety of colours, and can have long or short hair.

A Saint Bernard is a dog originally bred for rescue in the Swiss Alps. They are a large dog, with a large head, and can weigh anything up to 100kg (220 pounds). St Bernards are prone to many genetic health conditions, such as hip displaysia and turned eyelids, and have a lifespan of only 8 years. They are loyal and affectionate, but because they are so big it is essential they are well-trained, as such a large dog can knock children down and hurt them if it is boisterous.

A kennel, or doghouse is a small house you have in your backyard for a dog to live in. A kennel is also used to mean a place where a lot of dogs are kept, or somewhere your dog can stay while you are away on vacation or holidays.

A collar is a thin strip, usually made of leather, that is worn around the neck. Some collars are made of chain. Pet dogs and some cats usually wear collars all the time as somewhere to attach a nametag and registration disc. Dog collars usually have a loop on them that you can clip a lead to, so you can take your dog for a walk. Cat collars also have the loop, but cats are a lot harder to walk!
Border collies are a breed of herding dog originally from an area near the border of Scotland and England. They are thought to be the most intelligent dog, and the best herder. They are extremely energetic and if they are going to be kept as a pet not a working dog will need lots of regular exercise, stimulation and be very well trained. They are not well suited to families with small children.

The labrador retriever is a very popular breed of gun dog. They were originally developed to retrieve birds after they were shot. Labradors come in three main colours - yellow, black and chocolate. Labradors are a gentle, intelligent dog and make excellent family pets. They can be trained to be helping dogs, and are used as guide dogs for blind people.
