Mis forMortar and pestle
A mortar and pestle are used together for grinding things down or mashing them into a paste. They are most often used for crushing or grinding herbs for cooking. The bowl-shaped part is the mortar, and the stick you use for grinding things is the pestle. Most mortar and pestles are made of stone, clay or heavy wood.
Nis forNut (tool)
A nut is used to fasten onto the other end of a bolt to hold things together. Nuts are threaded on the inside and are screwed onto the thread at the end of the bolt.
Pis forPlane (tool)
A plane is a tool for shaving off thin layers of wood, to make something flatter or thinner. Planes are often used to make a sticky door fit better. Planes have handles on them placed so you can get the best force, and the wood itself is shaved off with an adjustable blade under the plane. Planes work best going with the grain of the wood, not across it.
As with many hand tools, you can also buy electric planes that don't require as much force to get them to work.

Sandpaper, originally called glasspaper, is paper with something rough stuck to one side. Sandpaper is used for removing old paint from things, for making wood or similar surfaces smooth, or for roughening up a surface.
There are hundreds of different varieties of sandpaper.
A saw is a tool for cutting things. The picture is of a hand saw, but there are bigger saws that are powered by an engine that can be used to cut very big pieces of wood, or even stone and concrete.
A screw is a type of fastener that you use to attach things together with. Wooden furniture is often held together with screws. Screws are threaded so that they are less likely to pull out once they have been tightened, unlike nails. Screws come with different shaped holes in the top, and the ends of screwdrivers come in the same shapes. The commonest ones are flathead or slotted head, and phillips head (cross shaped).
