A is for Akita

Akitas are large dogs originally from Japan, and are descended from one of the oldest dog breeds. The breed is currently split into two - the American Akita and the Akita Inu. The American breed is larger, and a lot more colours are allowed.
Akitas are a friendly, playful dog that needs lots of exercise. They can be boisterous around children, and can also be dominant so they need to be well-trained.

A is for Alabama

Alabama, abbreviated to AL, is a state in the south east of the United States of America. The capital of Alabama is Montgomery and the largest city in Alabama is Birmingham.

An alarm is a device or a signal that warns people of something happening that they need to pay attention to, such as a fire, a burglary or just that they need to wake up!

A is for Alaska

Alaska, abbreviated to AK, is a state separate to the others, at the far north west of the continent, north of Canada. It was purchased from Russia in 1867. The capital of Alaska is Juneau and the largest city in Alaska is Anchorage.

Albatrosses are large sea birds. The great albatross has the largest wingspan of any bird. Albatrosses can glide for very long distances. They eat squid and fish that they dive into the water to catch.

A is for Albino

An animal is albino if it is missing the brown pigment in their skin and hair that would otherwise make them a normal color. Albino animals are usually pure white with pink or pale blue eyes. Albino animals don't usually live very long in the wild as they do not camouflage very well. Albino and white animals are also prone to sunburn. Albino rabbits are very common as pets. The albino in the picture is a squirrel.

Ale is a similar drink to beer but is darker, heavier and more bitter. In some countries, ale is simply another word for beer.

A is for Alexandrite

Alexandrite is a beryllium aluminium compound that is a different colour depending on which angle you look at it. The most prized colour combination is a range from green to purple.

A is for Algae

Algae are a large group of very primitive plants. Algae usually grow in the water, and the algae most people are familiar with is the green slime that grows on the inside of fish tanks.
Algae can range in size from that familiar green slime right through to what is commonly called seaweed. Most algae grows in the water, but it can also be found on land too.
Some algae grow with other organisms. Lichen is algae and fungi growing together. Some corals and sea sponges have algae growing inside them to provide them with oxygen and sugars.

A is for Alien

An alien is someone or something from another place that doesn't belong here. An alien might be a person from another country, or they might be a creature from another planet.

A is for Alight

Alight can have many different meanings.
It might mean something that is on fire. It might also mean you are getting off something after it has stopped moving, like a horse or a train. It could also mean you are coming onto something after a flight, as in "see the bird alight on that branch".

Alike is when some things are all very similar. The two girls in the picture are dressed alike.

Something is alive if it is able to grow and reproduce.
When something that was alive stops being alive, it is dead.

A is for Allergic

You are allergic to something if your body has a bad reaction to it. Allergic reactions can include getting a rash, sneezing, getting watery eyes or having difficulty breathing.
People are often allergic to dogs or cats, pollen or insect stings.

A is for Alligator

An alligator is a very large reptile, found in China and America. They are related to crocodiles but are generally darker in colour and have a broader snout. Alligators live in fresh water.

A is for Alloy

An alloy is a mixture of two or more metals, or one metal and something that isn't a metal. They are mixed together so well you cannot tell that the alloy is not a pure metal. Alloys typically have very different properties to the components that went into making the alloys. Alloys are often much, much stronger than their individual components. Many tools and machines are made from alloys because they need to be strong.

A is for Almond

The almond is the seed inside the fruit of the almond tree. Almond trees grow up to 10 metres tall. They are related to plums, cherries and apricots. Most people think of almonds as a nut, not the seed of a fruit.
Almonds can be eaten raw or roasted and salted, or used in cooking cakes and puddings.

A is for Aloe vera

Aloe vera is a type of succulent plant, suited to arid regions. The plant is supposed to have many medicinal properties, and you often see aloe vera added to tissues - the aloe are supposed to stop your nose getting red if you have a cold and blow your nose a lot. Aloe vera is meant to be very good for your skin, and it helps burns heal faster.

A is for Alone

Someone is alone if they are all by themselves, with no-one else around them. Sometimes alone is just a feeling - you may have people or things around you but you feel alone, and this can make you very sad.

A is for Aloof

Aloof means not friendly or not showing much interest. Someone who is aloof may be quiet and seem cold and distant.
