Wis forWine

Wine is made by fermenting the juice of grapes. Fermentation makes a drink alcoholic. Alcohol is a substance that can make you feel very good and happy if you drink a little bit of it, but you get drunk if you drink too much. Wine is a drink that is only for adults.

Animals and insects with wings can fly. This means they can go over things without touching the ground, for much longer distances than if they just jumped over them.

You wink when you briefly close one eye. If you wink at someone, it can mean that you like them in a sexual way. Men are most likely to wink at women. Winking at someone after you say something usually means you have some kind of hidden meaning in what you say, and that you are being somehow sneaky, misleading, or you were joking.

Winter is the coldest time of the year. During winter, trees stop growing and many animals go to sleep in caves to keep out of the cold. In very cold areas, you will see snow in winter.

You wipe something when you gently rub it with a cloth, or your hand. Wiping generally means passing the cloth over it once or maybe twice, not rubbing it many times like when you scrub something. Children with runny noses often wipe their noses with the back of their hand, or their sleeve.

Wire is made of metal stretched out long and thin. Wire is stiffer than string so you need tools like pliers to bend it into intricate shapes. Wire is most often used to make fences out of on farms.

A wish is something you really, really want. Some people wish for possible things, like "I wish I had a better job" but other people might wish for impossible things, like the man in the picture has wished he can fly. Some things are said to be able to grant wishes. When you blow out your birthday candles you can make a wish, and fairies are said to be able to grant wishes.

Wisteria is a deciduous woody climbing vine, related to the pea. It grows big droopy bundles of purple flowers in spring. Wisteria is a very hardy plant and can tolerate dry conditions, frost and neglect.

A witch is someone, usually a woman, that practises magic. Witches are often seen as practising bad magic that can curse people or make them sick. Some witches are good. These witches are called white witches. It is generally thought that witches can use their magic with various techniques to see into the future. A male witch is sometimes called a warlock.
