A black bean is a small, oval-shaped bean with shiny black skin and a pale inside. Black beans are also called black turtle beans because their hard, dark shells look a little like a turtle's shell.
Black beans are common in Mexican, Central American, Caribbean, and South American cooking. People eat them in soups, stews, salads, rice dishes, and tacos. They can be bought dried or already cooked in cans.
