A photo of a yellow caboose on railway tracks.
A caboose is a small railroad car that travels at the very back of a freight train. It gives train workers a place to watch the cars and the track. A caboose often has a raised lookout area called a cupola, where a worker could see along the train.

Cabooses were once used by train crews to check for problems, such as broken wheels or loose equipment, and to show warning lights to trains behind them. Modern trains usually use electronic equipment instead, so cabooses are rarely used today. The word originally referred to a small cooking room or cabin on a ship.
