List of action and motion words

Ways of moving around and things you can do with your body. Many of these overlap with the verbs category.

His forHit

You hit something when you connect with it, hard. Some examples are hitting a nail with a hammer, hitting a ball with a bat or hitting a target with an arrow.

His forHop

Hopping is a way of moving along on only one leg. You keep one leg up, and jump along on the other leg.

Jis forJump

This horse is jumping over the barrier. When you jump, your legs leave the ground and you either go up in the air or over something.

Kis forKick

You kick something when you hit it with your feet. A lot of sports are played by kicking a ball.

Kis forKiss

Kissing is when you press your puckered lips against something else. People normally kiss each other on the cheek or lips.

Kis forKneel

When you sit down low on your knees, you are kneeling.

Lis forLanding

Something lands when it comes down from flying in the air and alights on the ground, or on water or similar. When you land, it is called a landing, for example "Look at the pilot landing her plane".

Lis forLick

You lick things by wiping your tongue on them. Children usually lick lollypops or icecream and dogs lick people's faces.

Lis forLimp

You limp when you walk unevenly, so you keep your weight off a sore leg or foot. When people or animals limp they tend to move very slowly and unevenly. Another word for limp might be hobble. Limp can also mean something that is soft and floppy.
Marching is a way of walking that is brisk and formal. Soldiers march together with their steps in time with each other. See also: March, the calendar month.
