The swede, or swedish turnip, started as a cross between a <a href="/c/cabbage">cabbage</a> and a <a href="/t/turnip">turnip</a>. Swedes can be roasted, <a href="/j/julienne">julienned</a>, <a href="/m/mash">mashed</a> and added to <a href="/s/soup">soups</a> and <a href="/s/stew">stews</a>. Swedes are called rutabagas in the United States and Canada.
