A throttle is a control that regulates how much power an engine produces. In a car, motorcycle, boat, or airplane, the throttle controls the flow of air and fuel into the engine. Opening it makes the engine work harder and move faster. It is usually connected to the accelerator pedal.

Throttle also means to limit, reduce, or slow something.

In many cars, the throttle is connected to the accelerator pedal. When the pedal is pressed, the throttle opens wider, allowing more air into the engine. The word comes from an old English word meaning to choke or restrict, because a throttle partly blocks the flow of air.
