A token is a a stand-in object that is used to represent something else.
Tokens are used in many ways. You might buy tokens to use instead of money at an amusement arcade or to use a public transit service. In software, a computer token can prove that a person is allowed to use a service. In language and computer programs, a token is also a small unit, such as a word or number.
