Chutney is a very general term for any kind of sauce that is made from preserved vegetables. Chutneys are usually spiced too. Chutneys can be preserved by pickling them with acid, either vinegar, citrus juice, or pickled with brine. Chutneys can be very hot and spicy, or very sweet. They are often used in Indian and Asian food.
