A countertop is a flat, firm surface fitted on top of lower cabinets or cupboards. Countertops are commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, and where you buy things in a shop - which is where the original meaning derives, as a place to count money.

In a kitchen, people use the space for preparing food.
