A photo of a fishing hook
A fishing hook is a small, curved piece of metal used to catch fish. It has a very sharp point that can pierce a fish's mouth and often has a barb, a tiny backward-pointing part that helps keep the fish from slipping off. The other end has an eye, or small hole, for attaching fishing line.

To get the fish to bite the hook, people put bait or a lure onto the hook. Hooks have been made from bone, wood, and shell for thousands of years, but modern ones are usually steel.
