List of shapes

Most things in the world are made up of shapes, both two dimensional and three dimensional. Here are some of them.

Lis forLoop

A loop is made by taking something long and thin and bending it over so it encloses a space in the middle. A loop might cross over itself or just curve around. The bag handles in the photo are all made out of loops. When you tie your shoelaces you make two big loops in the knot.

Nis forNugget

A nugget is an uneven shaped lump of something. The two things that most commonly come in nugget form are gold nuggets and fried chicken nuggets.

Ois forObelisk

An obelisk is a 3 dimensional shape with four sides, tapering towards the top. Obelisks are usually tipped with a pyramid. They are a popular shape for monuments.

Ois forOctagon

An octagon is a shape with eight sides. The stop sign in the picture is an octagon, and it is mostly red.

Ois forOrb

An orb is another word for a sphere. The word is most often used to describe mystical or very decorative spheres, such as Christmas decorations or crystal balls.

Ois forOval

An oval is like a circle that is not perfectly round. Ovals have one long, curved edge but are not the same size in all directions. Their width and height are different. The stone in the middle of the ring in this picture is a blue oval.

Pis forParallel

Two lines are parallel if they are next to each other and are always the same distance apart. There are many parallel lines in buildings. The vertical lines the bricks make in the right side of the picture are parallel.
A parallelogram is a shape with four sides. A parallelogram looks like a rectangle that has been pushed sideways. Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and the same length. The windows in the picture, viewed from this angle, look like a parallelogram. In fact, each of the windows is a little parallelogram by itself.

Pis forPentagon

A pentagon is a shape with five sides. The building in the picture has been made in the shape of a pentagon.

Pis forPlume

A plume is a long, fluffy feather, or something that looks like a plume. The picture is of a plume of smoke. See also: plumage.
