Shapes

Most things in the world are made up of shapes, both two dimensional and three dimensional. Here are some of them.

Showing 21-40 of 62

Fis forFlat

Flat means not round, and not bumpy, just even and level, like a flat table or a flat road.

The landscape in the picture is very flat.
A fleur de lis is a stylised lily flower. It is used on coats of arms, in jewellery, as a pattern on fabrics and tapestries and as a decorative element on many household objects. It is strongly associated with the medieval time period in England.

Fis forForm

A form is the shape of something, or a framework made around the edge of an empty space that then is filled to make a shape. The picture is of some forms about to be filled with concrete to make the floor of a building.

Gis forGlob

Glob is a short form of the word globule, like the globules you see inside lava lamps.

Gis forGlobule

Globules are small lumps of something that are almost spherical.

His forHeart

A heart shape has come to mean "love". People draw red hearts or give red heart shaped chocolate to people they love.

His forHelix

A helix is a curve in three dimensions. The thread of a screw is a helix, and wire coiled around a rod makes a helix. A spiral staircase is a helix. Some plants, like in the picture, naturally grow into helixes.
The word "coil" is sometimes used to mean a helix and sometimes used to mean a spiral, or sometimes used to mean the act of wrapping something around something else to make a helix or spiral.
A hemisphere is half a sphere. The word hemisphere is usually used when talking about half of the sphere of the Earth, particularly the top and bottom halves of the sphere. The top half of the Earth is called the Northern Hemisphere and the bottom half is called the Southern Hemisphere.

His forHexagon

A hexagon is a shape with six sides. The hexagon in the picture is a wooden box.

His forHook

A hook is a curved shape you attach something else to. Hooks are shaped so you can hang something on a hook and it won't slip off, or you hook something to something else and they don't come apart. Hooks are often used on a crane to lift things.
Many birds have a hook-shaped beak.

Lis forLine

A line is something thin that only goes in one direction (or one dimension), and has no corners. The sides of other shapes are drawn with lines. The picture is of lines painted on the floor of a railway station.

Lis forLoop

A loop is made by taking something long and thin and bending it over so it encloses a space in the middle. A loop might cross over itself or just curve around.
The bag handles in the photo are all made out of loops. When you tie your shoelaces you make two big loops in the knot.

Nis forNugget

A nugget is an uneven shaped lump of something. The two things that most commonly come in nugget form are gold nuggets and fried chicken nuggets.

Ois forObelisk

An obelisk is a 3 dimensional shape with four sides, tapering towards the top. Obelisks are usually tipped with a pyramid. They are a popular shape for monuments.

Ois forOctagon

An octagon is a shape with eight sides. The stop sign in the picture is an octagon, and it is mostly red.

Ois forOrb

An orb is another word for a sphere. The word is most often used to describe mystical or very decorative spheres, such as Christmas decorations or crystal balls.

Ois forOval

An oval is like a circle that is not perfectly round. Ovals have one long, curved edge but are not the same size in all directions. Their width and height are different.

The mirror in the picture is oval shaped.

Pis forParallel

Two lines are parallel if they are next to each other and are always the same distance apart. There are many parallel lines in buildings. The vertical lines the bricks make in the right side of the picture are parallel.
A parallelogram is a shape with four sides. A parallelogram looks like a rectangle that has been pushed sideways. Both pairs of opposite sides are parallel and the same length. The windows in the picture, viewed from this angle, look like a parallelogram. In fact, each of the windows is a little parallelogram by itself.

Pis forPentagon

A pentagon is a shape with five sides. The building in the picture has been made in the shape of a pentagon.
