A photo of tomato sauce
Tomato sauce is a thick liquid made from cooked tomatoes. It may also contain onions, garlic, oil, vinegar, salt, and herbs. It can be smooth or have small pieces of tomato.

Tomatoes originated in the Americas, where people used them in sauces before Europeans arrived. Italian cooks later made tomato sauces by slowly cooking tomatoes with olive oil, garlic, or herbs. The sauce is often served with pasta or on pizza.
