A photo of a trivet
A trivet is a small stand or pad placed under a hot cooking dish. It protects your table or counter from being damaged. Trivets may be made of metal, wood, cork, stone, or heat-resistant silicone. Some have legs, some are flat; trivets can be very decorative.

The word comes from an old word meaning "three feet" because early trivets often stood on three legs.
