Ais forAsleep

You are asleep if you are sleeping. The cat in the picture is asleep.

Ais forAwake

You are awake when you are not asleep. When you are awake, usually your eyes are open and you can move around.

Ais forAwoke

Awoke is the past tense of waking up, or another way of saying you are waking up.

You might say "I awoke at dawn". The word is also used in books and stories to show a person noticing an idea or truth, like "she awoke to the problem."

Bis forBedtime

Bedtime is the time in the evening when a person goes to sleep. It is a word we use in everyday life to talk about when children or adults should rest.

Bedtime usually involves a routine, like brushing your teeth and getting into your pajamas.

Dis forDoze

You are dozing if you are sleeping lightly, and can be easily woken up.

Dis forDream

When you are asleep, sometimes you dream. Dreams are a little like a movie that plays in your head while you sleep. Sometimes dreams are very ordinary, sometimes they are exciting, and sometimes they are scary. Scary dreams are called nightmares. Often things happen in dreams that aren't possible in real life.

Dis forDrowsy

Drowsy means feeling sleepy or not fully awake.

A drowsy person might yawn, blink often, or nod off. It can happen after a long day, during a boring class, or after eating a big meal. Some medicines can make you feel drowsy.

If you have insomnia, you have trouble sleeping, which means you are tired during the day. Someone who has insomnia is called an insomniac. Insomniacs might have trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both.
Many medications have insomnia as a side effect.

A kip is another word for a nap.

Nis forNap

A nap, sometimes called a kip, snooze or siesta, is a short sleep, usually in the middle of the day after lunch.
A nightgown, nightdress or nightie, is something you wear to sleep in. Only girls and women wear nighties.
A nightmare is a bad dream. Nightmares can be extremely frightening, and make you wake up scared.
You might also use nightmare to describe a particularly bad event, for example "we had a nightmare vacation".
Oversleep means to sleep longer than you planned or needed, and you don't wake up at the usual time.

If you miss your alarm or fall back asleep, you might be late for something.

Pajamas, also spelt pyjamas or just PJ's are clothes that you wear at night when you sleep. Pajamas can be worn by girls, boys, men or women, but nightgowns are only worn by girls and women. The lady in the picture is outside in her pajamas.

Ris forRest

You take a rest when you stop working and be still for a time.
Once you have had a good rest, such as the morning after a good sleep, you are well rested.

Sis forSiesta

A siesta is a short sleep taken in the middle of the day, particularly by people in Spain or Latin America.
A similar word to siesta is nap or snooze.

Sleep is a time of rest, usually for about eight hours at night time. People usually sleep in beds. When you are asleep, you usually have dreams, but not everyone can remember their dreams the next morning.
A sleeping bag is essentially a blanket that closes around the edges with a zipper. Sleeping bags keep the person inside warm and dry. They are usually used while camping, as a mobile bed.
Sleepwalking means to walk around or do things while you are still asleep. A person who sleepwalks may seem awake but is not really aware of what is happening.
