Spiders are a kind of animal known as an arachnid, and they are related to the scorpion. All spiders have a head, body, eight legs and no wings. Spiders come in a variety of colours, but most are brown or grey. They range from so small you can hardly see them, right up to the size of a plate.

Spider plants are a very common, easy to grow plant. They will grow in a wide range of conditions, and will grow indoors too. They can remove air pollution from inside your house or office. New spider plants are easy to grow by pinning down into some soil the baby plants that grow on the end of long spikes on the adult plant, and then cutting them off when they have roots.

A spike is a long, thin, pointed object. Some kinds of nail are called spikes. Some types of shoes have spikes on the sole to give them better grip. Many plants and animals grow their own spikes as a type of defense.

Something is spinning if it is moving around and around a central point. Windmills spin, so do spinning tops. If you throw a ball the right way, it will spin as it flies. Skaters and ballerinas sometimes spin while they are performing. Spinning is also a way to turn raw materials like sheep's wool and cotton into fibers suitable for making into cloth.

Spinach is an edible green leafy plant that grows to about a foot tall. It is from Nepal and southeast Asia. Spinach can survive very severe frosts. It is usually eaten cooked, on its own or with other food. Spinach goes well with cheese and garlic.

Spinifex is the common name for a type of tussocky grass that grows in arid regions of Australia. It has very sharp leaves. As spinifex ages it grows outwards and dies in the centre and will form a circle that can be several metres across.
