Fis forFlea

A flea is a small insect that lives in the hair or fur of an animal. Fleas bite the animal and drink their blood, and can make the animal very itchy because of all the bites. If you have a pet cat or dog you should get it a flea collar or some other flea treatment so they don't get fleas.
A fly is a very common insect that can fly, as the name suggests. Flies lay their eggs in rotting food or dead animals in the wild, and in your house they lay their eggs in any of your food that they find. The eggs hatch into maggots.
Glow-worm is a name given to any insect on the ground that glows, and you can see them at night. Some do look like worms, most are kinds of caterpillar or beetle. Firefly is also a word for the same insects, but glow worm is usually used for glowing insects on the ground, and firefly for glowing insects that fly.

Gis forGnat

Gnats are any of a large variety of small, thin, flying insects that are often seen in large swarms. Their larval stage typically lives in water so they are common in swampy areas, or anywhere there is standing water.
A grasshopper is an insect with long back legs. They can jump a very long way, but they also have wings so they seem to jump many metres but are actually flying. They rub their back legs together sometimes to make a very high noise.

Gis forGrub

A grub is the immature form of many insects, particularly beetles. Grubs usually live in the ground or in fallen leaves, eating rotting vegetation. The grubs you commonly see in your backyard will grow up to be either beetles or moths. Grubs all look quite similar to each other but can look dramatically different to the adult insect they will turn into.
Harvestmen are a group of arachnids with long, spindly legs. They look very similar to spiders, and like spiders they come in a huge variety of colors and sizes.
Hermit crabs are not actually true crabs, but are distantly related crustaceans. Hermit crabs don't have a shell of their own, so they need to find the discarded shell from another creature to wear. As they grow, they have to find another shell to replace their old one.
Hermit crabs are found all over the world, and many people keep them as pets.

His forHornet

A hornet is a common name given to some types of large wasp. Hornets have stingers and eat other insects.
Horseshoe crabs are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than to crabs. They have six pairs of legs, a hard shell that looks like a horse's hoof, and a long tail. Their first pair of legs are very small and are used for putting food into their mouths.
Horseshoe crabs are called a living fossil because there are fossils of almost identical creatures found that are 230 million years old.
The two horseshoe crabs in the picture are upside down.

Kis forKrill

Krill are small, shrimp-like crustaceans that live in huge numbers in the sea. They are food for a very large number of different sea creatures, including some whales. Krill are near the bottom of the food chain in the sea.

Lis forLacewing

Lacewings are small, soft-bodied insects with delicate, net-like wings that look almost lacey. Lacewings can eat tiny pests like aphids, helping keep plants healthy.

Lis forLadybug

The ladybug, or ladybird, is a very small beetle that eats aphids. As aphids are pests, it is seen as a very good thing to have ladybugs in your garden.
Ladybugs are usually red, orange or yellow with black spots.

Lis forLerp

A lerp is a protective cover made by the larvae of some kinds of insects. Lerps are made from sugary liquid that the larvae make. Once it is dry, it is hard and crystalline.

Lis forLobster

Lobsters are a group of sea creatures related to the crab. They have no skeleton but are covered in a hard shell. Lobsters are caught to eat, and are considered a luxury food. They are usually cooked simply by dropping them in boiling water.

Lis forLocust

Locusts are a kind of grasshopper that form into huge swarms. When they are swarming in such large numbers they can strip crops and gardens completely.

Lis forLouse

A louse is a small insect that lives in the hair, fur or feathers of virtually all animals. Most lice eat dead skin from their host, but some kinds of louse eat their blood too.

Mis forMaggot

Maggot is the common name for the larvae of flies. Flies typically lay their eggs or put live maggots onto rotting food that they find. Maggots are very commonly seen in carrion. The maggots eat the food, grow bigger and then pupate and turn into flies.
Millipedes are a type of creature that has many body segments, and two pairs of legs on each segment. They are related to centipedes, but they move a lot slower. Centipedes have only one pair of legs per segment.

Mis forMite

Mites are small, generally parasitic arachnids very closely related to ticks. Some mites are so small you need a microscope. Some mites infest animals, including insects, others infest plants. The mite in the picture is on a bee's head.
