A grater is a metal device with <a href="/h/hole">holes</a> on the sides that have sharp edges. When you scrape food across the holes, small amounts of the food get broken off. Graters are commonly used to grate <a href="/c/cheese">cheese</a> and <a href="/c/carrot">carrots</a> and for <a href="/z/zest">zesting</a> citrus fruits.
