A gargoyle is an ugly, even grotesque, ornamental water spout, usually found on extremely old buildings before gutters and downpipes were used. Gargoyles are ugly so they scare off evil spirits.

In stories, a ghost is the spirit of a person who has died. You might dress up like a scary ghost for Halloween.

Some large varieties of animals have giant in their name, like a giant anteater.
A leprechaun is a kind of Irish fairy. Leprechauns are usually little, older men wearing a green suit. Leprechauns make mischief, and store gold in a pot at the end of the rainbow. They are said to be able to grant wishes.

Vampires are a mythical creature which is said to exist by drinking people's blood. They are said to only come out at night as daylight can destroy them. It is also said they can only be killed by a stake through the heart, or by a silver bullet. A vampire has no reflection, so they cannot be seen in a mirror.

A witch is someone, usually a woman, that practises magic. Witches are often seen as practising bad magic that can curse people or make them sick. Some witches are good. These witches are called white witches. It is generally thought that witches can use their magic with various techniques to see into the future. A male witch is sometimes called a warlock.
