A bow in music is a type of curved stick that has a tensioned length of horsehair (or synthetic material) along one side. The hair is slighty rough, and is used to play string instruments like the violin or cello by drawing the hairs across the strings of the instrument. The friction of the hair against the strings causes them to vibrate, and create a sound.
