Verbs that start with R

Verbs are things you do. Action words!

Ris forReset

Resetting something means to either set it again, or to set it back to some kind of previous state. You might reset the time on your clock if you get it wrong the first time, or reset a computer so it is back to a freshly started up state.

Ris forRestrain

You restrain someone else when you hold them back and stop them from doing something. You can also restrain yourself, for example by stopping yourself having a second helping of dessert you are restraining yourself from eating too much. The man in the picture is restraining his friend.

Ris forRetrieve

You retrieve something when you get it from somewhere it shouldn't be, and return it. For example you might retrieve a lost toy from your yard. The dog in the picture is retrieving a bone.

Ris forReturn

You return when you come back after being away. If you take something and put it back later, you return it. The man in the picture is returning from time away.

Ris forReuse

Reuse means to use something again. For example, portable water bottles are made to be reusable.

Ris forRide

You ride something when you sit on or in it and it takes you places, or does something interesting. Usually you ride a bike or a horse to go somewhere, and you ride something like a Ferris wheel or other fairground ride for fun.

Ris forRinse

You rinse something by giving it a light wash, usually under clean, running water. The person in the picture is rinsing a tomato. You often rinse something with clean water after washing it with soapy water, to get any remaining soap off.

Ris forRip

Rip is another word for tear, where you damage something by pulling it in two different directions at once until it breaks.

Ris forRise

Something rises if it moves in an upwards direction. The balloons in the picture are rising through the sky. Cakes rise when they are being baked. The opposite of rise is fall.

Ris forRisk

Risk is a measure of the chance of something going wrong, and what bad things will happen if it goes wrong. For example, you have a higher risk of having a heart attack as you get older and fatter. Risk is also exposing yourself to the possibility of something bad happening, for example the man in the picture is risking falling off the ladder by standing too high on it to hang his wares.
