Burmese cats are originally from Burma, and were once all brown. They are now available in a range of colours. Burmese are friendly and intelligent and make great pets. They like being social with their humans, and are talkative cats and will hold conversations with their humans too.

Canaries are small songbirds closely related to finches. They eat seeds and have a pretty song. Most canaries are yellow. Wild canaries are more mottled or yellow-green than pet canaries.

A chestnut horse is a reddish-brown colour, with a mane and tail the same colour or lighter than the rest of the horse.

Chihuahuas are the world's smallest breed of dog, named after their home state in Mexico. They are very loyal dogs, and are not suitable for a household with young children. They are prone to getting low blood sugar, and need regular feedings.

A colt is a young male horse, generally one under four years old. The colt in the picture is one year old.

Normal cats have three layers of hair. Cornish Rex cats only have the undercoat, which is very short, soft and silky. They also have curly hair.
Cornish Rex's are a slim, friendly cat suitable for shy children. Because of their thin coat they are best kept as an indoor cat.

Dachshunds are a small dog with a long body and short legs, sometimes called a sausage dog. Some people say that a dachshund is "two dogs long and half a dog high". They are the shape they are because they were bred to hunt animals that live down burrows, such as badgers and rabbits. Dachshunds come in a variety of colours, and can have long or short hair.

A dapple grey horse has white spots surrounded by dark hair, making an attractive pattern. Young horses that are dapple grey often slowly turn white.

People have been keeping dogs as pets for thousands of years. Dogs can be used to herd animals like sheep, and if they are well trained they will obey commands like sit and fetch.
Dogs come in a huge variety of different colours and sizes, from tiny Chihuahuas right up to huge dogs like the Great Dane. A female dog is called a bitch and a baby dog is called a puppy. Modern dogs were domesticated from wolves, and were originally kept as hunting companions.

Cocker spaniels are a medium-sized dog that come in several colours, the most familiar being the golden cocker in the picture. They are a happy, loyal, affectionate dog that makes a good pet. They do not like being left alone.
