Words that describe the current state of how something is.

Ais forAfloat

Something is afloat if it is floating.

Ais forAglow

Something is aglow if it is glowing.

Ais forAlive

Something is alive if it is able to grow and reproduce.
When something that was alive stops being alive, it is dead.

Bis forBalance

Balancing is the ability to stay still in a situation you'd normally be very wobbly in. For example, you need to balance to stand on a ball, or walk along a tightrope.

You can also balance other things other than yourself. You can balance a pen across the end of your finger, or balance a cup on the end of your nose.

Bis forBeauty

Beauty is the quality of something that makes it beautiful.

Cis forCaptive

Someone is a captive if they are restrained and do not have their freedom. Someone or something may be held prisoner in a cage, tied or chained up so they can't escape or are simply held captive by verbal threats.

Dis forDead

Something is dead if it used to be alive once but isn't any more.
All living things will eventually die, but some can live for much longer than others.

Eis forEvil

Evil means very bad behaviour that causes harm or is very unfair or unkind.

In fiction, the "bad guy" in any story is evil.

Fis forFalse

Something is false if it is not true, is not correct, or is wrong.
Sometimes an imitation of something real is called false, for example false teeth.

Fis forFree

Something is free if it is being given away, without any kind of cost attached to it.

Fis forFreedom

Freedom is the state of being free. You are free if you can do as you please and go where you please. Freedom means there are no restrictions on you, either physical ones or ones enforced by rules and laws.

A similar word to freedom is liberty, release or loose.

The opposite of free might be restrained, captive or contained.

Something is incomplete if it hasn't been finished yet.

A similar word to incomplete is unfinished. The opposite of incomplete is complete or finished.

Ois forOff

Something is off if it is not powered up and available to be used. The computer in the picture is switched off.
Off also can be used to indicate something no longer attached to something else: "the branch broke off the tree", or for reducing something: "take ten percent off the price".
The opposite of off is on.

Ois forOn

Something is on if it is powered up and able to be used. The computer in the picture is turned on. On is also used to indicate positioning, as in "the cup is on the table".
The opposite of on is off.

Pis forPoverty

Poverty is the state of having very little possessions, food or money.
Someone who is in poverty is poor.
The opposite of poverty is affluence.

Sis forShut

Shut is another word for closed. The window in the picture is shut.

Sis forSilence

Silence is the state of there being no noise. When it is very quiet you might say there is silence.
You may also use silence in terms of nobody talking about something for some time. For example "The celebrity is back in the media after a time of silence".
Something is unfinished if it has not been completed yet.
A similar word to unfinished is incomplete.The opposite of unfinished is finished.

Youth is the state of being young, or a young person. For example, "some youths were loitering around the grocery store".
