Sis forShrug

A shrug is an action where you raise your shoulders up. Shrugging is a way of saying "I don't know".

Sis forShut

Shut is another word for closed. The window in the picture is shut.

Sis forSift

Sifting is a cooking technique that makes an ingredient smooth by putting it through a sieve. Flour is sifted to remove any lumps before baking or cooking.

Sis forSip

You sip a drink when you drink only a very small amount at a time. When you sip your drink, you tend to drink it very slowly.

Sis forSit

You sit down when you put most of your weight on your bottom, on a surface like a chair or sofa. Sitting down is usually more comfortable than standing up.

Sis forSkate

A skate might be another word for a ice skate or roller skate. It might also describe the action of gliding over a surface wearing some kind of skates. Someone who skates is a skater.

Sis forSkid

You skid when you slide along the ground, with no rotation. Cars can skid along the road when there is ice on the road or they go too fast and lose control.

You slap someone when you hit them with the back or front of your open hand.

Sis forSlice

You slice something up by cutting flat pieces off if with a knife. When you are taking many slices off something, you try and make them all the same thickness.

You slide along a slippery surface by moving across it without ever breaking contact with that surface. The people in the picture are sliding down a waterslide.

Sis forSlit

A slit is a straight, narrow cut in something, and to slit something means you are making such a cut. The woman in the picture is wearing a skirt that has a slit in one side, which makes it easier to walk in.

Sis forSmack

You smack someone when you hit them with your open hand. The cat in the picture is smacking the other cat.
A smack is also a small amount of something, for example "this jelly smacks of garlic".
A similar word to smack is slap, trace, hint or suggestion.

Sis forSmash

You smash something when you break it up into lots and lots of pieces. When something has been smashed it is usually so badly broken it cannot be fixed.

Sis forSnap

Snap means to make a sharp noise using your fingers. People often snap to hurry someone.

It might also mean to break something long and thin, like snapping a twig.
Snarling is something an animal does when it is angry or feels threatened. It usually shows its teeth and makes a low, rough growling sound.

Dogs and other animals snarl to say "do not come closer" or "I might bite."

Sis forSneeze

A sneeze is a sudden explosion of air from your nose and mouth. You usually sneeze if something tickles the inside of your nose, or if you have a cold.
It is a good idea to cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze, like the man in the picture. A lot of mucous can come out when you sneeze and can travel a long way. If you are sick, you can make other people sick by sneezing near them.

You sniff when you suck air in through your nose in short bursts. You also sniff things so you can smell them.

Sis forSoak

Something is soaked if it is completely wet. Many foods require soaking before they can be cooked, or they will be hard in the middle even after they are cooked. Dried pulses like lentils and beans often need to be soaked overnight. The larger the bean the longer it will need soaking for.

Sobbing is crying with deep, shuddering breaths.

Sis forSolve

You solve a puzzle or a problem when you work out an answer or solution. For example, you solve a jigsaw puzzle when you put all the pieces together to make a picture, and you solve a Rubik's cube when you have each face of the cube a single color.
