P is for Page

A page is a piece of paper which has writing or images print on it. Books are made of pages that are bound together.

P is for Paint

Paint is a liquid you can buy that you can use to change the colour of something. Paint goes on when it is wet, so you need to wait for it to dry. Some paints come in small, dry blocks and you need to wet them with water to be able to use them. You use a paintbrush to paint with.

P is for Paintbrush

You use a paintbrush to paint with. The soft end of a paintbrush is usually made from hair.
A painting is a picture of something that has been made using paint.
Paintings can be very realistic, almost as good as photographs or abstract and you have trouble telling what they are pictures of.

P is for Palette

A palette is a flat board that artists put their paint on when they are painting a picture.
A palette could also be the set of colors the artist is using for their painting, or any particular set of colors.
Not to be confused with pallet.

P is for Paper

Paper is usually made from very finely ground up wood, bleached white. Paper is thin, usually smooth, and is used to make books, newspapers, magazines and of course you can buy blank or lined paper to draw or write on.
Pieces of paper come in lots of different sizes, textures and colours. Rougher paper is better for drawing on in pencil or charcoal. Paper can be cut or folded into different shapes, for crafts like origami.

P is for Pen (Write)

A pen is something that you use to write or draw with. Pens are filled with ink. Generally once you have drawn or written something in pen, you can't rub it out. You can rub out drawings in pencil.

P is for Pencil

A pencil is something that you use to write or draw with. Pencils are usually made from wood, with a thin strip of graphite (in a lead pencil) or waxy coloured material. The end of the pencil will wear out as you use it, and you will need to sharpen it. Pens do not need sharpening.
A pencil sharpener is a small device with a sharp blade in it that is used for sharpening pencils. When a pencil has been sharpened, the tip is pointy again and you are left with pencil shavings.

P is for Photograph

People use a camera to turn something you can see into a photograph. A photograph is a picture of one tiny moment in time. People like to take photos of their family and pretty things that they see.

P is for Pigment

Pigment is a substance that is so strongly colored that it can be used to change the color of other things too. Pigments are used to tint paint. The best kinds of pigment are ones that are permanent.

P is for Portrait

A portrait is a painting, drawing or photo of someone. A portrait is often just of someone's head and shoulders, or from their waist up.
Portrait can also refer to any picture or a blank canvas or piece of paper that is vertical, that is with the long sides on the left and right, which is the best way to put your paper to draw a portrait of someone. The opposite of portrait in this case is landscape, which is the best way to put a piece of paper to draw a landscape.

P is for Protractor

A protractor is a device used for measuring angles. You can get protractors as both half and full circles. Protractors are also useful for drawing angles.

Q is for Quill

A quill is a pen made from a feather, usually the wing feather of a goose. The end of the pen was dipped into a pot of ink and used for writing with.

R is for Ruler

A ruler is a thin, hard, straight piece of plastic or wood with numbers written on the edges at even spacings. Rulers are used both for drawing straight lines, and for measuring how long things are.

S is for Sketch

A sketch is a quick or simple drawing of something, although some sketches can be quite detailed. Sketches are usually made with pencil or charcoal.

S is for Stencil

A stencil is a thin sheet of cardboard, metal or plastic that has had a design cut through it. When paint is brushed or sprayed over the stencil, the paint only shows up on the surface underneath where the holes were cut. Stencils are a fast way to put a lot of the same design onto a surface.
A design that has been made from a stencil can also be called a stencil.

T is for Texta

A texta is another name for a marker in some countries.

W is for Watercolor

Watercolor is a style of painting. Watercolour paints usually come as dry cakes of paint, and are mixed with water to use them. The colors in a watercolor painting are soft and translucent and you can see the paper through them.
