N is for Nonchalant

Nonchalant means calm and not showing stress or interest. Someone nonchalant may act like they don't care.

P is for Pain

Pain is a bad, distressing physical or emotional feeling.
You feel pain when you are hurt or sick, or if something bad happens in your life like you break up with your boyfriend or girlfriend.

P is for Proud

You feel proud when you have a good feeling about something that you have done, or something that someone else has done. A parent may be proud of their child who has just graduated university. A child may be proud of making a very good painting.

R is for Restraint

Restraint means holding back. It could mean a device that holds you in place or stops you moving, like a set of handcuffs. It might also mean self-control. The dog in the picture is showing great restraint in not eating the cookies.

R is for Romance

Romance means the love and feelings between people, often shown in a gentle and caring way.

The word is also used for stories about love, like books and movies. Sometimes people say "a romance" when they talk about a love affair.

S is for Sad

When you are sad, you are gloomy and don't smile. Sometimes you cry when you are sad. People get sad when someone they like goes away, or if they watch a sad movie or read a sad book. The person in the picture is sad.

S is for Scared

You are scared or frightened when you are afraid of something. Children are often scared of big dogs or the dark. Many adults are scared of spiders. The boy in the picture is scared and hiding.

S is for Scream

A scream is a loud, sharp noise that people make when they are suddenly scared or hurt. People sometimes scream in excitement too.

S is for Shame

You feel shame when you know you have done something wrong, and you feel guilty and sad.

S is for Shy

You are shy if you are feeling nervous or uncomfortable when you are with other people. A shy person may want to stay quiet or not speak first. People are often shy when they are new to a place, or when meeting strangers.

S is for Smile

You smile when you are happy. When you smile, the corners of your mouth point upwards, and sometimes your smile gets so big your teeth show, just like the girl in the picture.

S is for Smirk

A smirk is a smile that is smug and slightly offensive. People often smirk at you when they think they know better than you do.

S is for Smug

Someone is smug if they are very confident of their ability to do something, but at the same time are calm and complacent about it, as if they can do it very easily.

S is for Sob

Sobbing is crying with deep, shuddering breaths.

S is for Solumn

Solumn is another word for serious. The opposite of solumn is silly.

S is for Sorry

You are sorry when you have done something that makes you feel bad. You say you are sorry by apologising.

S is for Sullen

Someone is sullen if they are in a bad mood but they stay quite still and silent.

S is for Surprise

You are surprised when something happens suddenly that you did not expect. When you open a present and you don't know what is inside, it is a good surprise.

T is for Tense

You are tense if you are worried or stressed about something.
When you are tense you tighten up your muscles. Tightening your muscles on purpose is also called tensing them.

T is for Tired

You are tired when you are sleepy and need to go to bed, or when you have worked really hard and are exhausted and worn out. The little boy in the picture is very tired.
