Words about words

To recover means to get something back. You might recover a phone that you dropped into a lake, or like the girl in the photo, you might stay in bed to recover from a cold.

Something reflects light if it is shiny enough that the light hits it and bounces back off it. The man in the picture has sunglasses that reflect light.

You release something when you set it free, to do as it pleases. The man in the picture is releasing an eagle.

You rescue someone when you take them away from a dangerous or bad situation. People who are hurt and cannot get out by themselves are rescued and taken to a hospital.

You restrain someone else when you hold them back and stop them from doing something. You can also restrain yourself, for example by stopping yourself having a second helping of dessert you are restraining yourself from eating too much.

Retro is a style where things that were fashionable many years ago are back in fashion again. A retro style can be achieved by using actual old items, or by making new things that have an old look.

Reuse means to use something again. For example, portable water bottles are made to be reusable.

You ride something when you sit on or in it and it takes you places, or does something interesting. Usually you ride a bike or a horse to go somewhere, and you ride something like a Ferris wheel or other fairground ride for fun.

Rip is another word for tear, where you damage something by pulling it in two different directions at once until it breaks.

Ripped is the past tense of rip. Something that has been damaged by being ripped is described as being ripped.
