A key is a small metal object that is used to open a lock.

A knob is a tool used to aid in the opening and closing of something, such as a door or a drawer. A knob is often rounded to make it easier to grasp and turn.

A lantern is a protective or decorative case for a light of some kind, often a candle or oil lamp. Lanterns can be made of glass and metal like in the picture, or made of paper in interesting shapes.

A lasso (pronounced either lass-ooh or lass-oh depending on your dialect) is a length of rope with a loop at one end. It is used for catching animals like cows and horses.

A lava lamp contains wax, water and a light which acts as heating element. As the lamp gets warm, the wax melts and starts to rise. As it rises it forms interesting shapes, which makes lava lamps fun to watch. Lava lamps come in all sorts of different colors, and the wax and water in them also come in different colors.

A lens is a device that changes the way light bends. When you look through a lens things look different to when you don't look through the lens.

Lenses can be used to make things seem closer than they are, or in spectacles to correct poor vision.

A light bulb is a device that converts electricity into light, so you can see when it is dark. The picture is of an incandescent light bulb, which works by running electricity through a filament, which glows white hot. Other kinds of light bulb work in different ways, but they all convert electricity to light.

A lock is a fastening something that only someone who has the key or code can open. Locks are usually on doors, cupboards and safes. Locks are meant to keep people in or out, or keep things safe.

A magnifying glass is a glass lens mounted in a frame with a handle. When you look through a magnifying glass at something, it appears much bigger. You use magnifying glasses to see details on things you couldn't normally see.

A measuring tape, or tape measure, is a flexible piece of tape that can be used to find out how big something is. Because you can bend it, you can measure things that are curved, like around your waist or around your head. You can't measure curves with something hard like a ruler.
