Pis forPorch

A porch is a covered area over the entrance to a house. Porches are very similar to a verandahs, but porches are usually just big enough to keep the rain off as you go into a house and verandahs can go almost the whole way around a house.

Qis forQuoin

Quoins are decorative stones at the corners of brick or stone buildings. Sometimes they are made of bricks on a stone building, or of contrasting coloured bricks on a brick building. In older buildings quoins were structural, and added strength at the corners. In more recent buildings, quoins are decorative, and are added to make a building look stronger, or simply give it an 'older' style look. Quoins on a house that is made from timber or any other light building material are purely decorative.

Ris forRail

A rail is a long, thin piece of wood or metal that is fixed in place horizontally. Rails are often used like in the picture as a guard to stop people going past them. They can be fixed to a wall as a support somewhere people might need them, like in a shower cubicle.
A special type of rail is found on a railway track.

Ris forRamp

A ramp is a surface that is sloped to make it easy for things with wheels to get between a low place and a higher place. The ramp in the photo is for people to get in and out of a truck.
Ramps are often used inside multi-storey car parks so cars can drive up to the top. Ramps are also used as well as stairs to get into a building. People can walk up stairs easily, but ramps are needed for people who are in a wheelchair, for people with prams, or for anyone who simply has trouble climbing stairs.

Ris forRoof

A roof is the topmost part of a house or building. Rooves are usually sloped and watertight so rain and snow runs off them and doesn't go inside the house.

Ris forRoom

A room is an enclosed area in a house or building with a specific purpose. A bedroom is for sleeping, a kitchen is for cooking, and a classroom is for learning.

Ris forRuin

Ruins are what remains of a house or some other building when it has not been looked after for a long time and starts to fall apart.
Ruins of buildings that are very, very old are often considered to be very interesting, and people will come from a long way to look at them.
A sandcastle is something you might want to build when you are at the beach. You can pile up damp sand and mold it into any shape you like, using your hands or using a bucket as a mold.

Another word for shack is hut.

Sis forShed

Sheds are usually found in backyards or on farms for storing tools, machinery or just things the owner isn't using. Sheds are not meant to live in, and often don't have windows or more than a dirt floor. Sheds are usually made out of wood or metal.

Sis forShutters

Window shutters are like small doors that can be closed over a window. They can be used for security, for keeping out sunlight, or for keeping out the weather.
See also a camera's shutter.

Sis forSign

A sign is something that conveys some kind of meaning. Signs might be made up of pictures, words, or a combination of both. Many signs are just symbols, so that people will recognize what they mean no matter what language they speak. Signs don't need to be painted on a board - for example, deaf people communicate with sign language, using their hands to make symbols.

Sis forSilo

A silo is a large cylindrical structure for storing a large amount of something. Silos are most often seen near farms for storing grain, but can also be used to store coal, wood chips or even missiles.
